Exceptional Education at the Heart of the Community

Primary School Travel Plan

A school travel plan is a tool which addresses a school’s particular travel needs, as well as road safety and health issues. Every plan is unique to the local area's circumstances. It aims to move the school community away from private car trips to and from school, towards more sustainable modes of travel such as walking, cycling and public transport.

A School Travel Plan promotes active, healthy, safe and sustainable travel to school. The main objectives of a School Travel Plan are to:

  • Improve health through encouraging active travel and reducing harmful emissions.
  • Improve the environment through reducing congestion, reducing pollution and CO2 emissions and improving facilities for walkers and cyclists.
  • Improve safety through highways engineering measures and increasing road safety education.
  • Improve access and opportunity by developing pupils' skills for safe and independent travel.

Travel to and from school is a key aspect of school life. The school journey is a perfect opportunity for children to learn about their local area, develop wider social networks and gain independence.

The average primary school journey is just 1.5 miles, and yet one in five cars on the road during the morning peak are doing the school run.

We would like to:

  • Reduce the amount of vehicles parking on or near the school site
  • Reduce the amount of parent cars travelling to and from School
  • Establish a safer and healthier approach amongst students travelling to and from School
  • Have more Staff and Students walking, scooting or cycling to and from School
  • Have more students using public transport
  • Reduce disturbance to our local residents and neighbours

Walk to school
Walking is the simplest way to travel short distances like the walk to school. Walking with friends is a social activity which engages children’s minds before they arrive so that their brain is stimulated and ready for school. Walking also has many proven health benefits, one of which is the release of endorphins around the body. This results in the children arriving feeling good which then means they are in a positive mindset and ready to engage in their education.

Cycle / Scooter parking facilities
Cycling to school helps young people to develop road safety skills and learn how to manage risk gradually. As children gain the skills they need to stay safe, they can develop independence, discovering strategies and solutions for getting about themselves.
Of course, an adult can always accompany younger children and help older kids get used to their route until they’re ready to go it alone.
We have cycle / scooter parking available for students and would love to see our shelters full. However, we still suggest that pupils bring a padlock of their own to use, all children should wear helmets when cycling or scooting. The school cannot take responsibility for the loss or damage of any bike or scooter.

Public Transport
Both the Long Lane and Stroud Green sites are well served by public transport. Woodside Tram stop is a short distance from both sites and there are four bus routes that pass close to the academy. You can plan your journey using the TfL journey planner - https://tfl.gov.uk/plan-a-journey/

OASP Lower and Middle schools formerly won awards for the TFL STARS award for 2018, 2019 and 2020 for our commitment in using more sustainable  modes of travel to and from school.

After the Covid pandemic put a hold on school trips, we are slowly getting back to continuing our push on sustainable travel and will be aiming to reclaim back our TFL STARS awards for the foreseeable future.
