Bertha Earth Jamie's Farm trip

Bertha Earth Jamie's Farm trip
Sandra Griffiths

As part of the Bertha Earth foundation, our year 7 Bertha earth ambassadors spent 4 days and 3 nights at Jamie’s Farm in Lewes. During our week, we went on a long hike up to Blackcap on the South Downs. The students found it hard going however the view from the top was outstanding and well worth it!   We spent time learning about ourselves as well as each other.

All the students took turns in helping in each area of the farm.

•              Working in the kitchen garden - harvesting food for us to eat.  Clearing spent vegetable patches ready to plant strawberries sweetcorn and other seasonal vegetables. Turning the compost.

•              Working the farm – feeding all the animals and ensuring they were clean and happy.  Fixing electric fences to keep the pigs safe.  Collecting newly laid eggs from the chicken coop. Using an axe to chop firewood for our campfire. feeding the animals including newborn Lambs, Chickens, Ducks, Pigs, Goats, Bulls and Cows.

•              Working in the kitchen - creating delicious food for us to eat and learning new recipes for healthy snacks.

All this with no sweets, fizzy drinks, mobile phones, or technology!  A great time was had by all.
